Despite the fact that I managed to move, purchase a home with my husband, and survive not one but four family visits in 2018, I also managed to read! I don’t know how it happened. It all started with some Ursula LeGuin books in the early winter of the new year, thanks to my lifelong friend Hannah, and went from there. I explored books I’d wanted to read for years, and really checked some books off of my reading bucket list!
All of these were fresh reads for me. I had never read a word of any of them before, yet all of them drew me in and begged me to finish reading them. My top six favorite books of this year are highlighted. There were truly no bad books in this bunch. Perhaps a few that were not as good as I had hoped, but no truly terrible volumes were read in 2018. So here’s the list, readers!
- The Left Hand of Darkness (Ursula K. LeGuin)
- City of Illusions (Ursula K. LeGuin)
- The Dispossessed (Ursula K. LeGuin)
- A Wizard of Earthsea (Ursula K. LeGuin)
- The Tombs of Atuan (Ursula K. LeGuin)
- Binti (Nnedi Okorafor)
- Binti Home (Nnedi Okorafor)
- The Wonderful Garden (E. Nesbit)
- Vicious (V. E. Schwab)
- A Wrinkle in Time (Madeline L’Engle)
- Slaughterhouse Five (Kurt Vonnegut)
- Next (Michael Crichton)
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (J.K. Rowling)
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (J.K. Rowling)
- The Song of Achilles (Madeleine Miller)
- Circe (Madeleine Miller)
As a bonus, below is a list of the comic books I read in 2018 in order of my favorites from top to bottom. I especially recommend Coda and Isola to fantasy readers, and Prism Stalker and The Weatherman to sci-fi readers. And anyone who knows me, knows that Snotgirl is my favorite comic. I also really enjoyed fantasy that mixes with real life in Blackbird and Submerged.
- Coda
- Isola
- Snotgirl
- Prism Stalker
- The Weatherman
- Blackbird
- Tomb Raider: Inferno and Tomb Raider: Survivor’s Crusade
- Zojaqan
- Deep Roots
- Submerged
- The Life of Captain Marvel
Thanks so much for joining me on my reading journey. Please feel free to comment and share your own 2018 reading list!
